Wonderfully welcome Jane

The Public Broadcasting Service, long affected by an advanced case of Anglophilia, this evening goes full fem.

This is a most excellent turn of events.

Masterpiece Theatre debuts a season of sheer-muslin delight with televised treatments of all six Jane Austen novels, plus a biopic. The programs are introduced by the first female host in the British showcase's 37-year history, Gillian Anderson, so haunting as Lady Dedlock in 2006's Bleak House.

It is already the year of the woman, or more precisely the PBS Sundays of 19th-century women, an empire-waist antidote to the day's domination of shoulder-padded men. Masterpiece just aired Jane Eyre, the 20th interpretation according to Internet Movie Database, which is perhaps more brooding in dank gothic manors than can be good for anyone.

Better than trendy

Nights out present the chance to blow off steam -- and look extra glamorous doing it. But unless you're a teenager, makeup trends may feel, well, too trendy to actually wear (glitter eye shadow, anyone?). Yet the old standby black liner and bright red nail polish may not make you feel particularly celebratory. There is a middle ground, however, where you can try something new and still feel comfortable. The following looks, created by New York City makeup artist Carlo Longo and New York City manicurist Donna D., are fresh, modern and appropriate. Even better, they're easy to do yourself. Try one (or more) and teach your inner teen a thing or two about beauty that transcends any trend.

METALLIC EYELINER

WHAT YOU WANT: Dazzling golden liner that sparkles subtly.

HOW TO GET THE LOOK: Start with a neutral shadow that's one or two shades lighter than your skin.

Red warns users of Quicktime 7.4 upgrade

Digital video specialist Red is alerting its users to an incompatibility with QuickTime 7.4 when using Red Alert, as well as issues with Final Cut Pro and Red One footage. Users will experience decreased system stability, so Red advises users to avoid upgrading to QuickTime 7.4 until either itself or Apple has issued a fix. Neither Red nor Apple has commented on what is causing the issue, and it is unknown if any of Red's other products are affected by the bug.

Local psychics peek into 2008

Flashback to December 2006. With a brand New Year right around the corner, could anyone have imagined some of the shocker moments that would define 2007?The Patriots run for perfection? The Sox celebrating another World Series win? Britney Spears shaving her head in the middle of a barber shop?

OK, so you may have seen at least one of those coming.

2008 promises to be full of headlines, but will there be any big surprises? What's going to happen at the Super Bowl? Will we see the first female president of the United States?Anyone's guess might be as good as the other, but there are a few people who claim to have the inside track on what lies ahead next year. The Sun Chronicle asked a few area psychics, Carol Ann from Angel Loft in North Attleboro, Lily from Lily's Astrology Readings in Providence, and Marjorie Cummings from Zodiac House in Walpole, for their take on what's going to break news in 2008.

Odds uncertain for more offbeat bills

One bill before the legislature would help regulate hair removal. Another deals with toilet access. And yet another allows some inmates to request -- and receive -- the death penalty.

Though the Indiana General Assembly is dealing with weighty property-tax issues, other more obscure bills have their champions this session.
